Pugilists hit exit in Milan

RWANDAN boxers Maurice Bikorimana and rookie Sibomana Niyitegeka suffered early exits at the on-going AIBA World Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy. Niyitegeka, who contested in the feather weight category (57kg), lost out to Argentine’s Perrin Ignacio on Saturday.Niyitegeka trailed in all three rounds; 2:3, 0:4 and 1:3 to eventually lose 3:10. It was however a more devastating defeat for the experienced Bikorimana after a 10:0 clean thrashing from Korean Park Kwan, ranked 101 in the world. The 20-year-old, who competed in the light weight category (64kg) could not even squeeze out a single point in the three-round match which was clearly dominated by his Korean opponent; 0:3, 0:5 and 0:2. No Rwandan has ever gone past the preliminary round of AIBA’s premier event. This year, 554 boxers from a record-breaking 133 countries are participating in the championship. Ends
