In a busy world, where you have to show up for several people, “me time” is hard to get although required. It is important to take that time off your schedule to spend more time with yourself. Many people think that having me time is boring because you have to spend it alone and with no company at all, but only a person that has spent quality time with themselves knows the good side of being only with your thoughts and imagination. Flora Iradukunda, a student in psychology, says that having quality time for ourselves should be the top priority because if our mind, body, and soul lack that time for ourselves it drains us. “Quality time is so important and crucial because that is when you get to discover who you are as a person, it teaches you about the talents you have, the good things you can achieve and it improves confidence, me time doesn’t mean to isolate yourself as many people think it is, actually me-time can be fun and addictive when a person starts creating it, and it is also a natural stress remedy,” she says. Alain Rurangirwa, a student, states that me-time is the healthiest ways of learning how to love yourself and the purest form that improves your relationship with the people around you. “It is pretty hard for anybody to love themselves that easily, in fact, we all struggle to accept ourselves, view ourselves as amazing humans, and give love to ourselves because we spend too much time either comparing ourselves to others or seeing ourselves in a negative image. Quality with ourselves teaches us a lot, sending that small amount with yourself, just meditating and doing the things that make you happy teaches you who you really are and it grows into loving that person that you spend time with, not only do you learn about yourself but you admire yourself because there is no one around to give you reasons to hate yourself,” he says. Rurangirwa stresses that quality time with ourselves also helps our brains to unplug and unwind. “On those days when we feel drained, sad, and miserable, having me-time can cure all those bad moods and can clear out a dark day to a clear blue day. Our brains when they are tired they are only asking for time off to breathe and to unplug from reality. Getting away from the things that drain you constantly creates an effect on our minds and soul, we are able to overcome a bad mood day with no problems because we give our minds, body, and brain the time that they need to reconnect with our body to heal and boost it with confidence,” he adds. Furthermore, Edna Uwase, a sales manager, insists that quality time with ourselves also boosts our productivity. “There are those days where we work endlessly, and without proper rest. Those days we even feel unproductive and unmotivated, so we often shrug it off saying that it will eventually get better but all we need to reboot our body and feel productive again is create that small time with ourselves, like go out to a quiet place, order your favorite meal sit and admire the environment or try do those activities you know boost up your mood. The next day when you come back for work you will notice a big difference in the way you work,” she says. Uwase says that we all are different and have different things that make us happy, the way we decide to spend time with ourselves is different. She advises us to find those things that make us happy and that we feel unbothered when doing, and then do them in our me time.
