KAYONZA - Domestic violence has been attributed to alcohol and drug abuse which topped the crime list in Kayonza District. At a monthly security meeting on Tuesday, officials cited marijuana and local brew commonly known as ‘kanyanga’ as the most common drug and alcohol used within the area. “The main security problem here is the use of marijuana and drinking of ‘kanyanga’ which is also a major cause for cases like rape and domestic violence. We have noticed that most rapists and men who beat up their wives are driven by drugs or Kanyanga,” security officials said. Sources within security establishment at the district levels said that while there are some individuals who distil the illicit beer in the country most of it is smuggled from the neighbouring countries of Tanzania and Uganda. “We are doing everything possible to arrest people who smuggle such illicit substances into the district because it increases crime rates. Those trying to brew locally are few, and will not survive our vigilance,” the police warned. Residents say the most affected sector in the district is Mwiri. “There are many cases of rape and gender based violence in Mwiri which need immediate action. This is because of wide use of cheap alcohol (Kanyanga) which is readily available even to young school children!” Joseph Maniraho a resident said. Other crimes revealed by sector leaders include; theft, isolated cases of armed robberies, and assault. Commenting on the reports, the Mayor Damascene Muhororo said: “We don’t have any security threat …there are just isolated crimes based on drug abuse.” Ends
