RHODA targets increase in exports as it merges with other agencies

As Rwanda Horticulture Development Authority (RHODA), Rwanda Tea Authority and Rwanda Coffee Development Authority merge, RHODA seeks to increase its horticulture export revenue receipts. According to RHODA, the merger of the three agencies will ensure one strategy for exporting products and market Rwanda as one country. “Both the cabinet and the parliament have endorsed the merger of the three agencies and there will be one management that will harmonize the operations and strategy of the new body,” said Peter Muvara the chairperson of RHODA. The merger is also expected to improve efficiency, coordination of activities and investment promotion in the sector hence promoting high productivity. According to Muvara, part of the export growth in horticulture will be realized due to the increased budget. “Previously, RHODA had a budget that was less than Rwf1billion annually while both Ocir-Café and Ocir-The had approximately Rwf10 billion each per year, so with this budget horticulture will be boosted,” stressed Muvara. The horticulture sector projects that by 2010 at least $12 million of export receipts would have been attained, though it remains under-developed. Currently the industry’s attracts $1.5 million. Although the exports are likely to increase, there are not yet any new projections made for horticulture under the new strategy according to the chairperson of RHODA. The merger of these various sectors will help RHODA attract private investors into the sector which has not been the case as it is with Ocir- Café and Ocir- the. The new institution will also help promote joint exhibition of the products from merged agencies at the international trade fairs which has not been the case.
