SOUTHERN PROVINCE HUYE—A police swoop conducted in the wee hours of Thursday morning netted over 150 people with crimes ranging from dealing in illicit beverages to lack of identification papers. According to Police Superintendent Peter Hodari, most culprits were arrested from areas of Tunmba, Matyazo and Rwabuye, notorious for drug-related crimes. Police impounded 5000 litres of local brew and other 50 litres of Ugandan made Kanyanga. “During the crackdown, we were able to confiscate a brewing apparatus for Kanyanga,” said Superintendant Hodari. “We also have with us a number of people caught with drugs like marijuana. The rest are people without identification papers who we suspect have run away from their homes for fear of being prosecuted under Gacaca courts.” On the fate of the people arrested, Superintendant Hodari said that dealing in banned products is punishable by law and that they will be produced before court soon. Those with out identification papers will be screened to determine their places of origin. Police sources say that the operation will continue until the vice is rooted out. Ends
