NUR Board repeals CIT director’s suspension

HUYE — The National University of Rwanda’s (NUR) Board of Directors has repealed the suspension of the director of the Centre for Instructional Technology (CIT), Gerard Rwagasana, after it emerged that proper procedures were not followed. The University Executive Committee had suspended Rwagasana on August 5 over alleged mismanagement of university property. However, a letter dated August 11 addressed to the Rector Prof Silas Lwakabamba, which was seen by The New Times, says the suspension should be repealed pending more discussion on the allegations leveled against Rwagasana. “After analysing the contents of the both letters [suspension letter and letter of appeal], I find that certain procedures/steps ought to have been followed before arriving at the decision to suspend him [Rwagasana] from duty,” the letter signed by the Board Chairman, Dr Theogene Rutagwenda reads in part. The letter was copied to the Minister of Education, all board members, all Vice Rectors and Rwagasana. The development follows an appeal made by Rwagasana in which he claimed that he was neither summoned to explain himself nor given written or verbal warning. Ends
