KIREHE - Seven Kirehe District officials, who were recently arrested over embezzlement of public funds appeared before Kirehe Court of First Instance for mention of their case, on Saturday. Three of the accused including the official in charge of logistics were temporarily released on bail and will be turning up for further hearings later on. Another official in charge of economic affairs will also appear in court on similar charges this coming week. Prosecution alleges that about ten people including the director of finance are involved in the case. “We are surprised that they are releasing the prime suspects, and are only keen in pinning minor offenders. We are watching the trend of events with great concern,” one district official commented after judge granted bail to the trio. The Mayor, Protais Murayire says the officials claimed that the receipt books were mistakenly burnt. “It is inconceivable to believe that a responsible public official burnt Government receipt books. Receipt books are normally regarded as critical documents,” the Mayor said. Sources say more financial irregularities are very likely to be unearthed in this court case. Ends
