Olympafrica Nyanza project gets underway

Rwanda National Olympic Committee (RNOC) has kicked off preparations to construct the Olympafrica in Nyanza. The project is aimed at community development through sports activities. The project will comprised of two main premises which will be composed of basketball, handball, and volleyball courts while another will be composed of the Mini-football pitch and athletics. Olympafrica Nyanza was set to have been finalised last year but this was not possible because the National Olympic Committee wanted the project to be done as an Olympic City benefiting the sports and other various projects for youth and the local community of Nyanza district. It therefore came to a standstill because some of the money offered by Foundation Olympafrica was used in the proposed feasibility and case studies of the Olympic City, while the rest was directed into programs which would be used in development of the general project. Foundation Olympafrica, which is the main financier, has requested the local Olympic Committee to do everything possible to have this Project finalised as early as possible. During a recent visit to Rwanda of Olympafrica Chief Executive Officer Thierno Diack, Foundation Olympafrica and RNOC came to a concrete agreement on what should be done basing on the feasibility studies being undertaken by Grabben Consultants. The feasibility study of the project has already started while the construction work is scheduled to start in September and is expected to down by January 2010. The project will cost an estimated $200,000. Olympafrica Foundation will offer $61000; the local Olympic committee $71000, the International Olympic Committee $50.000 while the local community of Nyanza district will contribute $18000. Ends
