Football in the country could go a notch higher if reports are true that telecom giants MTN are in talks with the national football federation to sponsor the national league next season. Ferwafa has been on the look out for sponsors ever since 2005/06 season when Bralirwa through its Primus brand cancelled sponsorship of the league after just one and a half years. John Bosco Sendahangarwa, who is MTN’s officer in charge of sponsorships, told Times Sport that the company is very much interested in local football and that negotiations are going on between Ferwafa and MTN to sponsor the national league next year. “We are interested in local football, and I think our intentions are very evident with the Peace Cup that we have been sponsoring for the last two years. “We are negotiating with Ferwafa to sponsor the league next year. The talks are still in infant stages but we certainly hope for a positive outcome,” Sendahangarwa said. Meanwhile, a top Ferwafa official confirmed that the football federation is in talks not only with MTN and a host of other Corporate Companies so that they can get the best deal. “We are talking with other companies as well, so that we weigh up the best deal. But it is not easy because the companies offer very little money,” the officials told this paper but on condition of anonymity. “We don’t want a similar situation like one we had with Bralirwa three years ago, who offered a little amount of money, which could only last for two months yet they expected us to advertise for them almost daily. The company which will offer the best deal will certainly sponsor the league next season.” the official stressed. Ends
