Theogene Uwayo has resigned from the Rwanda National Olympics and Sports Committee (RNOSC) presidency. In a statement addressed to RNOSC's general assembly on Friday, November 4, he said his resignation was a result of failing to have a common vision with some members on the executive committee. He did not divulge details. But Times Sport understands that he recently had issues with the executive committee amid the ongoing saga in RNOSC that saw the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) arrest two of the institution’s staff, suspecting them of forgery and making decisions basing on favoritism, friendship or nepotism. The two employees: Jean-Jacques Mugisha, the head of Rwanda's mission to the Commonwealth Games, and Jean de Dieu Mukundiyukuri, the Executive Director at RNOSC, were reported to have obtained travel documents for seven people who were not meant to be part of the delegation that traveled to Birmingham for the Commonwealth games in July. It is understood that prior to their arrest, the executive committee slapped them with a one-month suspension dating from September 29 to October 29, after which it considered firing them permanently. However, according to sources, Uwayo intervened and requested the committee to revoke the decision, and this stirred a disagreement between him and the members of the committee. Uwayo was elected to the office unopposed in May 2021, replacing Valens Munyabagisha who had been at the institution’s helm since March 2017. The RNOSC is responsible for developing, promoting and protecting the Olympic Movement in Rwanda, through promoting Olympic educational programmes in schools, and encouraging the creation of institutions dedicated to Olympic education, such as National Olympic Academies, Olympic Museums and other programmes related to the Olympic Movement It is also the institution at the forefront of organizing delegations that represent the country at the Olympic Games and at the regional, continental or world multi-sports competitions.
