World Vision launches first cohort of pastors pursuing theological studies

World Vision Rwanda, on January 10, officially launched the first cohort of 133 pastors who will undertake one year of postgraduate theological training at East African Christian College. This initiative follows the closure of over 559 churches across the country due to non-compliance with the government's 2018 religious regulations. In response to the closure, World Vision collaborated with faith-based organisations to identify pastors who lacked the required theological qualifications. Each of the 133 selected pastors will now have the opportunity to acquire the academic credentials mandated by the Rwanda Governance Board. This programme, aimed at strengthening church leadership and compliance, is part of World Vision's broader commitment to supporting vulnerable communities in Rwanda. ALSO READ: World Vision Rwanda marks 30 years of transformative impact on communities In her opening remarks, Pauline Okumu, the National Director of World Vision Rwanda, emphasised the significance of this initiative in shaping the future of pastoral leadership, noting that the training programme will equip them with the knowledge, skills, and spiritual guidance necessary to serve their communities effectively. This education is more than a pursuit of knowledge, It is a calling to apply God's truth to transform lives, use it as a tool for loving service, humble leadership, and courageous action, and we all know that leadership in the church is a sacred trust, and with greater knowledge comes greater responsibility, she said. Okumu underscored that the programme would help foster a well-developed, spiritually grounded clergy capable of meeting national standards and delivering transformative leadership in alignment with both biblical principles and Rwanda’s government requirements. Reverend Isaie Ndayizeye, Senior Pastor at ADEPR, emphasised the importance of this investment, highlighting that while World Vision may not always be physically present, the knowledge and skills imparted through this programme will remain and continue to benefit future generations. “We are in a country that is growing very fast, and we must ensure the church remains true and relevant for the future, even if we always find ourselves reacting to problems that we were not prepared for, we need to review our strategic plans and anticipate future needs,” he said. Reverend Ndayizeye also reflected on the broader vision for the church, urging the need for continuous growth and relevance amidst Rwanda’s rapid development. With unity, we can make this journey a success, and for the pastors going for this programme, remember that your role extends beyond spiritual leadership. You are tasked with addressing critical issues like poverty, conflict resolution, and creating a society free from harm, she noted Kankesha also highlighted the responsibility of the pastors undertaking the programme, urging them to integrate the theological knowledge they acquire with a broader commitment to holistic development. Jacqueline Nyirantamate, one of the pastors embarking on theological studies, shared her heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity, reflecting on the challenges she faced in pursuing her dream of studying theology. For a long time, I had always dreamed of studying theology, but financial constraints made it difficult. I didn't have the funds, but I kept praying and speaking about it until the offer from World Vision came, she said. Nyirantamate also highlighted the importance of this education in her calling and shared her aspirations with optimism. After completing my studies, I will be equipped with a deep theological understanding, enabling me to serve most effectively and properly as a pastor, she added.
