Engen has announced that it has permanently closed three of its petrol stations in the City of Kigali – Engen Gitikinyoni 1, Engen Gitikinyoni 2, and Engen Poids Lourds – effective January 13, 2025. According to the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA), the stations were operating in areas designated as wetlands, and their closure is part of the government's efforts to restore and protect these vital ecosystems. As part of this initiative, all 19 petrol stations identified in wetland areas are expected to cease operations by January 15, 2025, with others already shutting down or in the process of closure. He also noted that the remaining stations in Kigali have been designed to handle the traffic and there will be no disruptions in service.
