Four people were injured in a road accident in Gisenyi town on Tuesday, January 7, when a HOWO truck with plate number RAF 698Z lost control and crashed into pedestrians near Gisenyi Hospital. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Western Region Police Spokesperson, the accident occurred around 6:00 am, injuring two pedestrians as well as the driver of the truck and a passenger on board. Karekezi urged drivers to adhere to traffic rules, avoid over-speeding, and ensure their vehicles undergo regular maintenance checks to prevent accidents. He also asked the pedestrians to exercise caution while walking along roads, as he pointed at the importance of walking on the left side of the road to maintain a clear view of approaching vehicles. Meanwhile, Rubavu District authorities plan to divert trucks to the newly completed bypass (Rugerero-Byahi road) to mitigate the risk of accidents near Gisenyi Hospital.
