I am glad that the District Officer of Ngoma district has ordered all houses built with weak materials and those on road boundaries to be demolished. As a visitor in this country, I was both startled and saddened to learn that people who can afford to live in decent houses actually live in sub-standard homes made of unburned bricks. The irony is that the fences are built with firm bricks made of cement. The reason for building such weak houses was that it is hard to come across burnt bricks made of cement because cutting down of tresses and burning charcoal is strictly supervised. However, that claim has been dismissed by what the District Officer announced. Properly planned houses made of good materials should be encouraged, so that there are no cases of homes collapsing due to sub-standard material. Kimironko
