Rwandans in the country and abroad welcomed the New Year with joyous celebrations, reflective prayers, and a sense of optimism that could be seen to almost everyone who outside on to witness the beginning of another new year as soon as the clock struck midnight on Wednesday, January 1. In Kigali, the New Year’s Eve fireworks display lit up the skies over the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC), the central business district and the Rebero area, where thousands of cheerful revellers had gathered. At KCC, fireworks were shot at the stroke of midnight, with revellers celebrating the occasion in earnest, many sharing videos of themselves dancing in groups, singing and chanting “Turawusoje” (the year is over), hugging, and kissing their loved ones as they greeted the New Year 2025 in style. Restaurants and hotels were also bustling with themed parties. At the Crystal Lounge, Riders Lounge, Java House and Delizia Italiana, diners could be seen dancing while enjoying the New Year’s Eve menu celebrating Rwandan and international dishes. At Imbuga City Walk in the Central Business District, revelers gathered for a vibrant celebration to welcome the New Year 2025. Hostesses and DJs took turns on the decks, captivating the crowds with electrifying performances that set the mood for the night. Traditional music and modern entertainment blended seamlessly, creating an atmosphere of excitement and joy that lasted well into the midnight. Families, friends, and visitors gathered in the city center to witness the dazzling spectacle. For many, the night symbolized progress and the optimism of a country that has consistently celebrated its heritage while embracing modernity and inclusivity. I've achieved a lot, I completed university, and I have landed an amazing job, to make the list shorter. I think these are bigger things to celebrate,” Karangwa said. “Additionally, as Rwandans it was an important year because we reelected our own President Paul Kagame. Seeing him being elected and continuing to lead means a brighter future for us.” “Furthermore, we enjoyed being in a peaceful country. That’s why Rwanda hosted many events including global sports events such as the 2024 FIA General Assembly, music concerts attracting internationally recognized names. As Rwandans, we should also celebrate how our country is recognized worldwide due to good governance,” he added. ALSO READ: Festive season: Beef prices rise, while small livestock costs remain stable Brandinah Kagoyire, a university student of tourism and hospitality, said she was excited because she witnessed a new which means new adventure, experience, friends, lessons and rectifying - doing new things she didn't do previously. “Rwanda has given women priorities. Meaning, there's progressive women empowerment,” she said. Kagoyire praised country's efforts in driving its own tourism industry and its commitment to valuing and promoting its unique cultural and natural assets. “Rwanda prioritizes and pays close attention to this sector, unlike other countries. Those involved in daily tourism activities are not seen as having side jobs but as pursuing actual careers. This is worth celebrating and can be further enhanced to ensure a brighter future for all Rwandans,” Kagoyire said. Innocent Kachondo, an event organizer who celebrated the New Year at Imbuga City Walk, said that the significance of welcoming the New Year alive and in good health is unmeasurable. Coming together as Rwandans, alongside leaders, security personnel, and entertainers, created a memorable and lively atmosphere, he noted. “As a country, we successfully held harmonised elections, showcasing the efficiency of our government. Hosting international events like the FIA Awards General Assembly further demonstrated Rwanda's growing prominence on the global stage. This progress gives us optimism as we look forward to upcoming events such as the 2025 Road Cycling Championship and the potentially historic return of Formula 1 Grand Prix to Africa,” he said. For others, ushering in the New Year was a time for spiritual reflection. Churches across the country held overnight prayers and thanksgiving services. At New Life Bible Church, Authentic Word Ministries known as Zion Temple Celebration Center, the Anglican church in Giporoso in Kigali, St Michel Cathedral, worshippers gathered in large numbers, offering prayers for peace, prosperity, and personal growth.
