NORTHERN PROVINCE Marie Claire Umuhoza a third year student at the Higher Institute of Science and Animal Husbandry-ISAE Busogo, over the weekend drowned in Lake Kivu. She was part of the Gymnastics university team which had traveled to Gisenyi for a Gymnastics competition which was held along the lakeside town. Speaking to The New Times the University Rector Dr Charles Karemangingo, said that the accident occurred when students went up to TamTam beach for swimming after the competition. Eye witnesses said that Umuhoza, was reported to have objected going into the lake because she did not how to swim but was lured by two others who promised to teach her how to swim. Police has reportedly arrested the two. Dr Karemangingo further said that investigations were going on to establish the cause of the accident. Umuhoza, 24, an Agro-Forestry student has been an orphan after having lost all her parents in the 1994 Tutsi Genocide and was leaving with distant relatives. Her body was recovered on the second day, after the Army and Police marines mounted a search operation. This was the second time in two years, ISAE-Busogo has lost a student in a similar incident at the same beach. ‘This is a tragedy, for both the family and the institute,’’ Karemangingo said upon being contacted. He said that the administration would decide on what measures to put in place in order to avoid a future similar accident from happening. Ends
