Inflation down by 0.28 percent

Rwanda’s annual inflation fell to 10.07 percent in June from 12.69 percent in May this year. The drop in digits has been attributed to a decline in prices of utilities, the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) said in a statement. The national statistics body also added that in the month of June prices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels dropped by 1.02 percent while furnishing, household equipment and routine household maintenance reduced by 1.25 percent. The statement released last week also said that the annual average underlying inflation rate, which excludes fresh food and energy, was recorded at 17.8 percent in June 2009 a drop from 18.6 percent in the previous month. However, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages in the moth of June rose compared to May. These commodities have in the past played a positive role towards curbing inflation in the country. “It is noted that the index of food and non-alcoholic beverages slightly increased by 0.06 percent,” the statement reads. The NISR also said that ‘local goods’ increased by 11.49 percent on annual change with a monthly variation of - 0.34 percent, while prices of the imported products rose by 6.20 percent on annual change with a monthly change of 0.29 percent. The prices of the fresh products had a positive annual change of 14.51 percent between June2009 and June.Fresh products are food products which have seasonal fluctuations. Ends
