Rwandan artiste Pogatsa and Green Ferry Music founder and producer Dr. Nganji, have teamed up to release a joint EP dubbed ‘Reka So’, which delves into life's challenges and the evolution of Kinyatrap, a genre blending Kinyarwanda with trap music. According to Green Ferry Music, Reka So, a Kinyarwanda slang which translates to avoid faults, is a compelling caution that underscores the EP’s message, which as well explores the destructive consequences of indulging in power, drugs, sex, money, and the urban lifestyle when motivated by negative influences. ALSO READ: Inside the rise of Kinyatrap, first rap sub-genre by young Rwandan musicians The eight-track EP features Pogatsa’s exceptional lyricism, diving into relevant and often challenging topics including societal pressures and personal struggles among others. “This project reflects my real-life struggles—societal expectations, personal battles, and the pursuit of success. It’s an honest look at how these issues sometimes lead to conflict with the law, Pogatsa said, adding that, through these narrations, he hopes the project resonates with young people while at the same time honoring traditional Rwandan culture. “This blend of past lessons and modern dilemmas encourages listeners to reflect on their choices, he added. The EP, besides Reka So, comprises other seven songs namely Gusenya, Urutare, Urugendo, Umutima, Zontlo, Igiti and Sinabikora. A Pioneer of Kinyatrap ‘Reka So’, according to the duo, showcases the evolution of Kinyatrap, a subgenre of Rwandan hip-hop that Pogatsa and other artistes like Dr. Nganji helped bring into the mainstream Rwandan music scene. The sub-genre, known for its unique combination of Kinyarwanda language and trap music, has become a hallmark of Rwandan hip-hop that allowed numerous artistes to address important themes in a way that resonates with audiences. Reka So EP is available on all major streaming platforms as of December 13, with some of its eight tracks already gaining popularity locally. Who is Pogatsa? Born Thierry Ndorisimbi, Pogatsa is a leading figure in the Kinyatrap movement. He first gained attention with his 2018 debut album NGOMA 100, featuring the hit Nyabingi. His music explores Rwanda's colonial history and promotes national heritage. His second album, MUCAKARA (2021), produced by Dr. Nganji, further cemented his role in advancing Rwandan culture through music.
