The Court of Appeal in Kigali on Friday, December 13, handed a 20-year prison sentence to Jean-Claude Iyamuremye for his role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Also known as Nzinga, Iyamuremye, who had appealed a 25-year-sentence handed by the High Court in June 2021, was charged with genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, complicity in genocide, direct and public incitement to commit genocide, murder as a crime against humanity and extermination as a crime against humanity. In addition to being an influential member of then-ruling party MRND, he is said to have been the leader of Interahamwe militia in Kicukiro during the Genocide, which claimed more than one million lives. Iyamuremye was born on December 14, 1975, in the former Gatare Cellule, Kicukiro Sector, Kanombe Commune of Kigali City.
