Ibuka to honour saviours

• MTN donates Rwf1.6m to survivor’s fund As part of the ceremony that will be held to mark the end of the 100 days of mourning with regard to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Ibuka, the umbrella association of survivors will honour persons who saved Tutsis during the mass killings. According to Ibuka President, Theodore Simburudari, the function will be held at Nyanza memorial centre in Kicukiro on 19 July. “On this day, we will honour some people who saved the Tutsis during this tough period and among other things, one dollar campaign officials will also reveal to the public the collections for housing orphans of the genocide,” Simburudari said. With regard to the campaign, MTN Rwanda staff yesterday donated Rwf1.68million to support this noble cause. While presenting the cheque to the Director General of the Rwanda Diaspora Directorate, Robert Masozera, the MTN Chief Operations Officer, Andrew Rugege thanked the campaign officials for this initiative adding that it has come at the right time. “At MTN we annually give back to the community through various activities we carry out during the 21 days of Yello care. The one dollar campaign falls within these days and I thank our staff for their selfless participation that has enabled this donation,” Rugege said. In response, Masozera also explained that the campaign has so far raised close to Rwf600 million affirming that the funds will be used for the intended need. He also noted that construction will begin right after the function that will be held by Ibuka to conclude the mourning period. About seven blocks will be constructed on the 2.5 hectares that have been secured in Kagugu, a suburb of Kigali. According to officials, these will accommodate at least 600 homeless orphans. Ends
