Rubavu — The just ended three day inter-parliamentarians conference on security in the great lakes has lauded and encouraged the inter country security maneuvers in the region. The parliamentarians reiterated that such measures are building blocks to entrenchment of peace and called their governments to put more efforts in enhancing reconciliation. Organized by Amani Forum-Rwanda, the conference that has brought together the representatives of countries within the Great Lakes attracted 38 parliamentarians at Gorilla Hotel-Rubavu. It ended yesterday after assessing security situation in the region. “We need to have concrete decision on conflict prevention, resolution and management. Prosper Higiro, the vice speaker of the senate said while opening the conference. According to the Dar-Es-Salaam Declaration of 19-20 November 2004, on peace, security, democracy and development within the Great Lakes Region, the Heads of State and Government of the Great Lakes Region decided to establish a regional security framework for the prevention, management and peaceful settlement of conflict. To that end, the framework was mandated to evaluate regularly relevant sub-regional initiatives and mechanisms and adapt them while encouraging appropriate traditional structures. “We have agreed in our resolutions to enhance reconciliation and pressure our governments to remove all armed groups operating within our boundaries. We will also convene another conference in DRC to asses our achievements,” Denis Polisi the vice speaker of the lower chamber of deputies and Amani Forum president said. According to the resolutions of the conference that The New Times has seen, the inter-parliamentarian conference on security collectively agreed also to precisely lobby their governments to enact reforms within their national institutions to enhance good governance.
