Munyakazi sentenced to 1 year

The Nyarungenge Court of High Instance has sentenced the former Director General of the National Institute of Statistics (NIS), Dr. Louis Munyakazi, to one year in prison after he was found guilty of corruption and abuse of public office, The New Times has learnt. Munyakazi was arrested late last year by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the orders of Prosecutor General. He applied for provisional release earlier this year but court denied him bail basing on the sensitivity of his case. Among other things Munyakazi is accused of offering tenders illegally and embezzlement of public funds. “Prosecutors have been asking for a sentence of 10 years and above but the court found it fitting to give him a more lenient sentence. He was found not to have embezzled funds directly but he flouted tender procedures” a source from the NPPA which preferred anonymity told The New Times. Munyakazi is said to have awarded a tender to supply stationary to his brother, Jean Bosco Munyakazi in 2007. He awarded the tender worth approximately Rwf3million to a company called Technique Vente Service (TVS) owned by his brother to compile, bind and print brochures. Munyakazi was supposed to supply the brochures at a Government retreat that was held at Hotel Akagera that same year. Ends
