Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah became Namibia's first female president after winning an election with 57 per cent of the votes, the country's electoral commission said on Tuesday, December 3. Her closest rival Panduleni Itula got 26 per cent in November 27. ALSO READ: Namibia to halt visa-free entry for Western countries that don't reciprocate The 72-year-old hails from the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, which has governed the country for 34 years since independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability, Nandi-Ndaitwah said after being declared president- elect. With Nandi-Ndaitwah’s election, Africa will get two female presidents. Currently, Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan is the only female president on the continent. Nandi-Ndaitwah has served in numerous senior roles including foreign minister.
