Brazilian volleyball player Mathaus Wojtylla Mesquita Campos has opened up about decision to embark on new volleyball adventure in Rwanda. The star setter signed for Rwanda Energy Group (REG) volleyball club in October after agreeing to a three-year deal. He started the national volleyball league season on a slow pace as he settles for life in Rwanda where he found a new volleyball family. Known for his prowess on the court and warm personality off it, Campos shared insights into his volleyball journey, life experience in Rwanda, and aspirations for the future. “For me, the most interesting thing about Rwanda is the people, they are very friendly,” the 24-year-old told Times Sport. “It’s similar to Brazil in that way. I also love the food here; it’s amazing.” He may have not found his form yet, but Campos is only positive, speaking highly of his teammates who are helping him to settle. “ It’s been two months since I arrived here, and adapting hasn’t been easy, especially in my position as a setter, but I know I still need to improve to earn more opportunities to prove myself to the coach and secure a spot as a starter,” he said. “My teammates are incredible. I feel I have the best team in my hands because I’m the setter,” he added. Born in Porto Velho, Campos previously played in competitive leagues in his home country Brazil and Romania before moving to Rwanda in what marked his first time playing in an African league. Initially, he underestimated the level of playing in Africa but the Rwandan volleyball league proved him otherwise. “When I first heard about the African league, I didn’t think it was very strong. But when I arrived and saw the power and energy of the players, I completely changed my mind,” he admitted. ALSO READ: Who is REG new signing Mathaus Mesquita Campos? To him, the move wasn’t about money but his connection with Rwanda. “I never think about money. I care about the people and the energy of the place.
