ICTR launches documentation center in Gicumbi District

NORTHERN PROVINCE GICUMBI - International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) yesterday launched an information and documentation center at Gicumbi Court of Higher Instance, as part of the Tribunal’s ‘Umusanzu’ extension project. Addressing those present, the guest of honor Dr. Sarah Kilemi who is ICTR head of Administrative support services, called upon Gicumbi Court of Higher Instance Judges, prosecutors and other legal practitioners to utilise the center to widen their knowledge. “This information and documentation center is one of the true testimonies of the existing strong collaboration between government of Rwanda and the ICTR,” said Kilemi. Dr. Kilemi added that ICTR is committed to working closely with Rwandan courts to eradicate the culture of impunity, stem genocide ideology and promote unity and reconciliation in the country. “The journey to success has just started,” she said. Cecile Juru Rugema, the president of Gicumbi Court of Higher Instance hailed the ICTR for the project, saying it will also enable residents of Gicumbi to monitor closely the progress of ICTR in prosecuting perpetrators of 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. “This information center shall enable Rwandans closely share information with the ICTR,” said Rugema. Also present at the launching ceremony was Mayor Bonane Nyangezi, Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) 408 Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Eric Murokore, Gicumbi Court of Higher Instance Prosecutor, Vincent Niyonzima and Police representatives. Ends
