RK Industries inaugurated Rwanda's first toothpaste factory, a $5 million facility in the Kigali Special Economic Zone, on November 22. The Indian-Tanzanian factory that manufactures the ProSmile brand produces toothpaste in five flavours and 13 sizes, crafted to meet international quality standards. During the inauguration, Kunal Chudasama, the Managing Director of RK Industries, discussed the $5 million investment. We have acquired two warehouses, two plots of land, and one vacant plot for future expansion. This investment covers the machinery, raw materials, and other expenses, he said. The company currently employs 40 staff members. The contribution we aim to make to Rwanda’s economy includes creating employment, providing quality products, and introducing new product lines in the future, he added. Looking ahead, Chudasama revealed plans to introduce a new product tailored to the Rwandan market. From January 2025, pending Rwanda FDA approval, we will begin producing charcoal toothpaste, something Rwandan consumers have specifically requested. It will maintain the same high quality as international brands. Our machines can also produce hand sanitisers, which we aim to start manufacturing to reduce reliance on imports, he said. He added: Our major partner in this journey has been I&M Bank Kigali. They have supported us in every way, enabling us to make such a large investment. We are really appreciative.” Benjamin Mutimura, Managing Director at I&M Bank Rwanda, said: “Today, we are celebrating the great products RK industries have introduced, five toothpaste brands under ProSmile. Nothing can be better than a smile. What do we live for if not to be happy and have a smile? RK Industries is making this possible, he said. He pledged ongoing support for RK Industries’ growth and operations. We want to assure you that we will continue supporting your marketing efforts, distribution networks, and expansion plans. We see potential for growth, and I can confidently say we have the funds to help you achieve it. Mutimura emphasised I&M Bank Rwanda’s commitment to national priorities. We are proud to support initiatives like Made in Rwanda and industrialisation. Whatever contributes to Rwanda’s economic growth, I&M Bank is here to ensure those dreams become a reality. Emmanuel Habimana, the Director General for the Department of Planning, Control, and Evaluation of Industrial and Commercial Activities at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINICOM), emphasised the factory’s opening as a pivotal moment in Rwanda’s industrial journey. “With industries like this, we aim to increase the industrial sector's contribution to GDP from 22 per cent to 24 per cent and beyond, he said. He also noted the economic and public health impacts. Annually, Rwanda spends $4.6 million on imported toothpaste. This factory will cover 11 per cent of that demand initially, with hopes of eventually meeting 100 per cent. Affordable, high-quality toothpaste ensures good oral hygiene for all Rwandans, he added. The factory is projected to increase its workforce to 500, boosting related sectors like packaging and transportation. Its eco-friendly packaging aligns with Rwanda’s climate goals, enhancing the country’s reputation for sustainability and quality. Habimana expressed optimism about ProSmile’s potential in regional and global markets, stating that such expansion could bolster foreign exchange earnings and establish Rwanda as a trusted producer of high-quality products.
