Rwandan actress Vanessa Ariane Irakoze is making a name for herself for her compelling performances in various popular television series and her face is increasingly making rounds of scenes on the screens. Irakoze became a household name in Rwandan film industry when she starred in one online movie title ‘Maya’ as a lead character. Her acting name ‘Maya, ’quickly lifted her career, becoming a famous character that alternatively changed her life. Irakoze burst onto the Rwandan film scene in 2020 with her debut role in The Secret, a web series directed by renowned film director Yves Mizero. She has quickly established herself as a prominent figure in the country's rising film industry. Her portfolio includes leading roles in acclaimed productions such as City Maid, The Secret, Ishusho ya Papa, and Maya. During the 10th anniversary of the Mashariki African Film Festival, she won the 'Best Iziwacu Actress' award for web series for her leading role in ‘Maya’ series. Her acting journey started when she first became interested and drawn by the magic of movies. Watching films transported her to different worlds, and felt a deep desire to be part of that storytelling process. “My love for art inspired me to turn my hobby into a career,” she said. The actress' path to success wasn't without its challenges. Like many in her field, she faced numerous auditions, rejections, and the competitive nature of Rwanda's small film market. However, her breakthrough came with the titular role in Maya, a series that showcased her versatility and depth as an actress, catching the attention of both audiences and industry pioneers. She shared her acting experience with The New Times’ Eliane Irakoze in an exclusive interview. Excerpts: How do you prepare for a new role? I start by deeply understanding the character's background and relationships. I spend considerable time researching and often draw from real-life experiences to bring authenticity to the role. I particularly value collaboration with directors, viewing it as a symbiotic relationship where their vision guides my performance. My interpretation enriches the overall narrative. What role/ film that changed your life? The role that significantly launched my career was in a movie called Maya, and I was the main actress. Playing this character allowed me to showcase my versatility and depth as an actress, and it garnered a lot of attention from both audiences and industry professionals. Landing that breakthrough role was a turning point. It led to more opportunities and collaborations with different producers and directors. It also gave me the confidence to take on more complex and challenging roles. The award-winning performance in Maya resonated particularly well with audiences. Its story relates to many girls my age. It has a strong connection to my journey. While the role demanded significant emotional intensity, I found the audience's response deeply rewarding. What advice would you give to aspiring actresses who are just starting out? To aspiring actors, my advice is that they should Stay true to their passion and never give up, even when faced with challenges. Be open to learning, and take every opportunity as a stepping stone and surround yourself with supportive people who believe in you. Projects in pipeline Looking ahead, Irakoze is already involved in new projects, including an upcoming production titled Hurts Harder. Her aspirations extend to exploring diverse roles across different genres, from intense dramas to action, and she expresses keen interest in projects that highlight important social issues.
