We need honesty and accountability for sustainable peace in the region

The ongoing dialogue between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), facilitated by Angola, has undoubtedly consumed considerable time and resources. However, it is disheartening to note that these efforts have yielded limited tangible results. The discourse has often veered away from the core issues, perpetuating a narrative that casts Rwanda as the primary antagonist. ALSO READ Nduhungirehe says Rwanda bound by Luanda agreement on regional security It is imperative to acknowledge that the root causes of the conflict in the eastern DR Congo are deeply rooted in internal dynamics dating decades back and this has led the country to become a hotbed for armed groups targeting not only Congolese citizens, but also neighbouring countries. The presence of armed groups – said to be over one hundred of them – fueled by ethnic tensions and political instability, has destabilized the region for decades. While external factors may exacerbate these issues, the primary responsibility for addressing them lies with the Congolese government. The DR Congo must take decisive action to dismantle armed groups, address the grievances of marginalized communities, and promote good governance. By focusing on internal reforms and reconciliation, the DR Congo can create a more stable and prosperous future for its people. While regional cooperation is essential, it should not be used as a distraction from the underlying problems, which will only escalate as years go by. However, it is equally important for the DR Congo to acknowledge its own shortcomings and take ownership of the peace process. The international community should encourage the Congolese government to prioritize meaningful dialogue and reconciliation within its borders. By supporting genuine efforts to address the root causes of the conflict, we can help create a lasting peace in the region.
