Legendary Rwandan shooting guard Kenneth Gasana has said that he plans to continue his playing career at club level despite recently taking on a coaching role with the national team for the 2025 AfroBasket qualifiers. Gasana, 39, will serve as the second assistant coach to head coach Cheikh Sarr whose team is preparing to compete for a spot in AfroBasket 2025. However, the former Patriots star said that he is not done playing basketball at club level. I will be with the coaching staff this window. As far as playing basketball is concerned, I’m still active and currently talking to teams after this November window finishes,” Gasana told Times Sport. The qualifiers are scheduled in Dakar, Senegal from November 22-24. A look at Gasana's career Gasana first joined the national team in 2009 for the 25th edition of the FIBA AfroBasket Championships for Men in Libya, where Rwanda finished in 13th place. He quickly became the team’s top scorer at the tournament, averaging 18.3 points per game. His standout performance included a 31-point game against Morocco, leading Rwanda to a 9th-place finish—its best performance in an African Championship. Rwanda, as the region's sole representative, finished 10th at the 2013 AfroBasket, ahead of teams like Burkina Faso, Mali, Mozambique, and the Central African Republic. Gasana was Rwanda’s top scorer in that tournament, amassing 87 points and earning recognition as one of the top performers. In 2022, Gasana was appointed captain of Rwandan men’s national team for the second window of the FIBA World Cup 2023 qualifiers. He was instrumental in the team’s recent performance at the 27th African Basketball Championships held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where Rwanda placed 10th out of 16 countries.
