WESTERN PROVINCE NYAMASHEKE—Remains of 50 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, were over the weekend given a decent reburial in Gihombo Sector, Nyamasheke District. The remains were recovered from Gitwa cell,Mt Kizenga and Mahembe sector. Addressing mourners, Vicent Muragwa, the Mayor, castigated the former regime for promoting ethnic divisionism among Rwandans that led to the Genocide. “I know that many Genocide survivors in this sector have serious wounds in their hearts …but I advise you to focus on rebuilding yourselves by working hard and try to forget the bitter memories,” Muragwa urged. Calling on genocide suspects to speak the truth of what happened during the genocide, the Mayor urged residents to embrace unity and reconciliation efforts. The Nyamasheke District Police Commander Supt. Jean Marie Rurangirwa warned those who still harass Genocide survivors and witnesses. He also called on the public to report cases of Genocide ideology to concerned authorities. Christopher Ndamage, one of the survivors in the area said during the occasion that the massacres in Gihombo Sector were orchestrated by Obed Ruzindana who is still detained in Arusha, Tanzania. Ndamage added that there is still a huge number of Genocide victims whose remains have not been reburied. He appealed to district authorities and the government to look into this issue more closely.
