Rwanda National Police (RNP) announced on November 5 that 51 people have been detained in Southern Province over involvement in illegal mining activities. In a post on X, RNP stated that they collaborated with local authorities in the operation aimed at preventing the consequences of illegal mining, including mining-related fatalities and environmental degradation. As noted, the detainees include miners and traders who were involved in purchasing minerals unlawfully. ALSO READ: Two miners die in Gakenke mining accident According to RNP, 17 people were detained in Kamonyi District, nine in Ruhango District, and 25 in Muhanga District. RNP expressed appreciation to those who provided information that led to the arrests and issued a stern warning to others engaging in illegal practices.
