WESTERN PROVINCE KARONGI — 124 head teachers drawn from different primary and secondary schools in Karongi District, last week, completed a three-day training on how to foster reconciliation in schools. The workshop was organised by the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) at the Centre Bethanie in Bwishyura Sector. In an interview with The New Times, an official from NURC, Rejinah Ntaganda Abanyuze, said the training was part of efforts to curb ethnic divisions and genocide ideology which was reported in schools within the district. “Despite being a process, from this training we are sure that divisionism and genocide ideology in schools will be no more,” Ntaganda said. Azalias Nzamutuma, the head teacher of Groupe Scolaire St. Jean Baptiste de Musango in Rwankuba Sector, observed that the training was timely as the knowledge acquired will help them check divisions among pupils. Nzamutuma, who also doubles as the head of ‘Intore’ Teachers’ association in Karongi District, added that the head teachers vowed to build a united country by transforming Rwandan children. “We have all resolved after this training to model a new Rwandan child… one without any sign of genocide ideology or ethnic divisionism,” he said.
