Former Miss France donates to One Dollar Campaign

Former Miss France, Sonia Uwitonze Rolland has donated Euro 1000 (Approx. Rwf 800,000) to the One Dollar Campaign aimed at aiding genocide survivors. She made her pledge through a letter addressed to the First Lady Jeannette Kagame in her capacity as the President of Unity Club. Speaking to The New Times yesterday, the Director General of Rwanda Diaspora Directorate, Robert Masozera said he recently met with Uwitonze in Europe and briefed her about the campaign. “When I met her in Europe, I told her about the interest of Unity Club to have her voice for the campaign; it is in this context that she pledged her contribution of Euro 1000,” Masozera said. He added that she made her pledge through a letter addressed to Mrs Kagame. Uwitonze was Miss France in 2000. She was born in Rwanda in 1981. She is currently an actress and President of an association dubbed ‘Maisha Africa’ which supports orphans of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis. In a related development, Detroit Waza, an American soccer team founded in 2008 has also joined the One Dollar Campaign. According to information posted on Detroit Waza’s website, coach and player, Dominic Scicluna, was expected to arrive in Rwanda yesterday June 19, to help spread awareness and support the cause. While in Rwanda, Dominic will join top African stars like Eto’o and Drogba in a charity soccer game on June 22, to help benefit the survivors of the genocide sponsored by the One Dollar Campaign. The One Dollar Campaign came into existence on April 4 with an aim of raising funds to finance the establishment of accommodation facilities for the homeless orphans of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
