30 Tele-centres to be opened throughout the country

Government will open 30 tele-centres across the country to enable people access ICT services, the Minister in charge of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the President’s office, Romain Murenzi, told The New Times, yesterday. By next month the project that will see tele-centres being set put in thirty districts. According to the minister, there are currently 12 fully functional tele-centres that provide information and communication services like; internet, printing, money transfer while final work on the other 18 is still underway. Flanked by visiting International Telecommunications Union (ITU) General Secretary, Dr Hamadoun Toure, Murenzi made the remarks shortly after touring Groupe Scholarie Kagugu. He expressed optimism that investing in services that revolve around information technology would give government’s vision of making Rwanda a technological hub a major boost. “We are delighted and determined at the same time to see our projects grow to international standards because this has a direct positive impact on our mode of governance and storage of data, security and efficiency of work in all sector,” Murenzi said. He acknowledged the setbacks and challenges that still impact the vision of transforming the country into an ICT hub, before setting off to inspect Tumba College of technology and Gicumbi Telecentre in the Northern Province. Dr Hamadoun was optimistic that the dream of leading African children to the heart of technology was slowly coming true. “With combined efforts and the strong commitment of His Excellency the president, this new generation will have adequate use and access to information and modern technology,” he said. Hamadoun pointed out that teacher training will be key to this development and pledged full commitment towards connecting the world in a bid to make it a global village. Ends
