NORTHERN PROVINCE GICUMBI — The Byumba Anglican Church Diocese (EER/D) in partnership with a local NGO, Christian Aid on Monday launched a HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in Gicumbi District. The launch at Rwankonjo Cell in Cyumba Sector, was marked by plays, songs and poems presented by HIV/AIDS awareness campaign youth clubs, hailing from Rutare, Mutete, Kaniga and Rushaki Sectors. Under the theme “SAVE” the campaign aims at combating the spread of HIV/AIDS through abstinence; while educating residents to take care of AIDS patients, widows and orphans. Addressing participants, the Bishop of Byumba Anglican Church Diocese, Onesphore Rwaje, said youths should lead the fight against the Aids scourge. “The future of this country lies in the hands of the youth, which is why you should take all precautions to fight the spread of AIDS,” said Rwaje. He said the diocese is committed to working hand in hand with other religious groups to check the virus spread. Christian Aid Rwanda Programme manager, Venant Nzabonimana, affirmed his organisation’s commitment to guaranteeing health and assisting vulnerable groups in the country, including the fight against HIV/AIDS. “We believe in life before death,” Nzabonimana said, calling on those present to render care to people living with the virus. “We should show love and care to our brothers and sisters living with HIV/AIDS virus,” he added. During the occasion, three best performing HIV/AIDS awareness youth clubs namely; Imbonera of Rutare, Haranira Ubuzima of Kisaro and Inshuti za Yezu of Mutete Sectors were each given a ball and a sealed present, for their exemplary performance at the ceremony. Also present at the ceremony was Cyumba Sector Executive Secretary Therese Mujawamariya and the District Aids Control Committee (CDLS) coordinator Phanuel Nzitabakuze. Ends
