For years, Rwanda's growing film industry, also known as Hillywood, has been the domain of seasoned actors who cut their teeth in the early days of the country's cinematic renaissance. These veterans, with their wealth of experience and undeniable charisma, have long been the faces audiences associated with Rwandan storytelling on the screens. However, a new chapter is unfolding in the narrative of Rwandan cinema, one that is enclosed by a fresh generation of young actors eager to make their mark. What's particularly exciting about this new generation of Rwandan acting is the speed at which these young stars are rising. In a remarkably short time, they have demonstrated immense talent, versatility, and a deep understanding of their craft. The presence of these emerging actors injects new life into productions, offers diverse perspectives, and pushes the creative boundaries of what Rwandan cinema can achieve. As they elevate the industry, the growing filmmaking industry provides them with more significant platforms to showcase their skills. In no particular order, The New Times’ Eliane Irakoze shines a light on some of the most promising young actors worth keeping a keen eye on in Rwanda's film industry. Dwayne Shema Widely known as ‘Dylan’, a character he portrayed, the actor burst onto the scene with his debut in the popular web series 'Maya', instantly captivating audiences with his undeniable talent. His two-season run on 'Maya' solidified his reputation and expanded his fan base. He then showcased his versatility in several other series, including lead roles in 'Family Issues' and 'Behind', as well as appearances in 'Impanga' series and 'My Father-in-Law'. Shema has recently been recognized with a Best Actor nomination at the prestigious Mashariki African Film Festival. Dr Nsabi Dr Nsabi, a character portrayed in various films he featured in, started off as a comedian and his natural flow of humour had since captivated fans far and wide. Dr Nsabi mostly acts in ‘Ikirera’, a language spoken by people from the northern region of the country. He is known in different web series ‘Kwivuko’ and My Heart’ among others. He recently joined Zacu Entertainment TV series ‘Shuwa Dilu’ alongside prominent actors Seburikoko and Bamenya, now airing on Canal Plus. Angelo Shami The young actor made his acting career debut in ‘Behind’ web series and has since seen his talent only growing, hence earning him casting in other films like ‘This Life’ and ‘Around Me’. Angelo’s talent has undoubtedly gained appreciation from film audience while he continues ti establish himself as a must-cast character in several film projects coming up. Bertin Uwizeyimana The first time he appeared on the screens was in the ‘The Secret’ series which suddenly boosted its traffic tremendously in no time and so was the actor’s talent. He was later seen in other web series like ‘Waz You’, ‘Maya’ and ‘Family Issues’ among others. Yvan Film Born Aboubakar Yvan Iradukunda, Yvan Film’s talent quickly pushed him to the spotlight as soon as people started to watch him on the screens acting in various movies, some of which are among the most popular in Rwanda. He has had lead roles in a host prominent local series like ‘Bamenya’, ‘City Maid’, ‘The Bishop’s Family’ or ‘Agahinda ka Liza’, ‘Maya’ and ‘Isi Dutuye’. The actor holds the Best Actor of the year award he received from Rwanda International Movie Awards in 2023.
