SOUTHERN PROVINCE HUYE — Come and See Africa (CASA)-Rwanda, a non-profit Christian organisation, on Tuesday donated science text books to nine primary schools in the district. The donation included mathematics, geography, physics and other science text books for subjects taught in primary schools. Each school obtained between 150-200 books from the donation worth about Rwf.2 million. Murenzi Frank, the Executive Director of CASA-Rwanda, who delivered the books, said that the donation is intended to facilitate the implementation of English as a medium of instruction. He noted that the mission of CASA-Rwanda is not only limited to bible training but also foster self-help mainly through education. “Rwanda is not endowed with abundant natural resources. So education becomes vital for our development,” Murenzi said. Rugina Gervé, who represented Ecole le Pigeonnier- a Huye based primary school, said the books will help teachers to improve the quality of teaching within their respective schools. He added that English text books especially for science subjects, has been the biggest challenge ever since English was introduced as the medium of instruction in schools. “We are pleased with this donation. It will go a long way in solving the problem of lack of teaching materials,” Rugina said. Vedaste Nshimiyamana, the District Executive Secretary, welcomed the support from CASA, saying that it supplements government’s efforts in providing quality education. He urged schools which received the donation to put the books to good use and to keep them in good condition for future use. CASA -RWANDA, a local branch of an American non-profit christian organisation, is working in partnership with students from the National University of Rwanda in its ‘Bible training’ programme. The 3-year programme is aimed at making students more knowledgeable about the Bible. It also contributes in improving the quality of education through organising seminars for teachers, especially in Information and Communication Technology. It also gives material support to vulnerable families living in Tumba Sector in the district. Ends
