Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has taken Bishop Jean-Bosco Harerimana, the pastor of Zeraphat Holy Church, and his wife Jeanne Mukansengiyumva into custody on charges of fraud and blackmail. RIB spokesperson Thierry Murangira confirmed that the couple was arrested on October 9, and is currently detained at the RIB Kimihurura station as the case is being prepared for prosecution. “A complainant, also a former member of Zeraphat church, has accused Harerimana of soliciting Rwf 10 million, with his wife allegedly complicit in the crime. He falsely promised to cure the Christian's long-term illness. Furthermore, the wife is suspected of blackmail, using pornographic images. Investigations are ongoing to gather evidence, determine the couple’s modus operandi, and uncover the source of the images. On this charge, the husband is considered an accomplice,” Murangira explained. ALSO READ: Priest arrested over defilement of 15-year-old student He emphasised that clergy members must serve as role models of ethical behaviour and that breaching the law damages their reputation and integrity. Upon conviction for fraud, the couple could face a prison sentence of two to three years and a fine ranging from Rwf3 million to Rwf5 million. For blackmail, penalties include one to three years in prison and fines between Rwf 100,000 and Rwf 300,000. With its headquarters based in Rubavu District, Zeraphat Holy Church also has a branch in Kanombe area in the City of Kigali.
