Rotary Club of Kigali-Virunga (RCKV), on Saturday, July 9 inducted Geoffrey Rugege as their 23rd club’s president for the year 2022-2023. He replaced Suman Alla. Rugege is Vice-Chancellor Emeritus of African Leadership University (ALU) a university built to educate the next generation of ethical and entrepreneurial leaders for the continent and the world. He is also a former Executive director of the Higher Education Council (HEC) among other assignments. Addressing the audience after his induction, Rugege commended the outgoing president for his leadership and achievements from which he pledged to carry on to keep members towards supporting communities. “Alla has done an outstanding job, especially in raising the recognition of the club and now the club has been known as the most active in the district,” he said from Serena Hotel, where the induction took place. He continued highlighting his journey as a Rotarian in various countries spanning over 50 years now and shared gratitude towards RCKV for believing in him and assuring him to achieve the club’s goal together with members’ will. Moreover, he pointed out the new task awaits him as someone who has also been part of several projects rotary in the areas of focus including Education and health, and sanitation over the years. “During my one year as president, I wish to focus on the project that improves the community and sustainability in various key areas,” he said In addition, he revealed that would like the club to advance the work they do with the public library as well as supplement it with the introduction of a mobile library to help anybody anywhere to access the reading culture. “The development is in line with boosting the reading culture on the African continent,” he explained. Additionally, in terms of health, he pointed out that they will keep on advancing the Rotary house for cancer patients in kinyinya among others. Speaking on the same occasion Alla the outgoing president pointed out that it was a tough and challenging year due to the covid-19 pandemic when the world needed solution-based leaders to support the community. However, it also has been a year and achieved a lot within such a period including starting three new clubs among others. The event was attended by various officials such as the CEO of RDB, Former Chief Justice, and Director General of REB among others. Sam Rugege, the former Chief Justice and a brother to the newly installed president who was also a guest of honor took the audience through his brother’s life as well as the role he played in the community through Rotary.
