President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi on Friday, June 1, received a message from his counterpart President Paul Kagame. Vincent Biruta, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, delivered the special message and among others, the delegation had Brig. Gen Vincent Nyakarundi, the Head of Defence Intelligence at Rwanda Defence Force. It was on the sidelines of the country’s 60th Anniversary of Independence. The two neighbouring countries have been making efforts to improve ties with a series of high-level bilateral meetings between political as well as military and security officials after frosty relations for the last six years. Heads of military intelligence from both sides held talks, from time to time, on cross-border security cooperation. In July 2021, Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente led a Rwandan delegation to Burundi for the country’s 59th Independence Day celebrations. While in Bujumbura, at the time, Ngirente reiterated Rwanda’s commitment to restore ties with Burundi.
