The Council of East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa) has confirmed that this year’s Kagame Club Cup Championships will be from June 28-July 11 in Kampala, Uganda. Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye told Times Sport yesterday on phone from Nairobi that Uganda had confirmed to host the event and expected them to honor their pledge. “The dates are fixed and the event will be held in Kampala on June 28-July 11. Uganda confirmed their readiness to host the event so we don’t expect any changes,” Musonye said. Initially, Rwanda had been tipped to host the event after hosting the African Youth Championships early this year but the local football body, Ferwafa didn’t receive any official communication from Cecafa. Musonye also disclosed that they’re looking for sponsors to inject extra money into the two-week long tournament to supplement what is provided by the main sponsor, President Paul Kagame. However, the Cecafa SG was reluctant to give details about which sponsor(s) have shown interest in coming on board, saying that the press will be informed when something concrete has been signed. President Kagame, who is very passionate about sports and football in particular, has been supporting the annual club championships for the last six year to a tune of $60,000 towards prize money annually. Kenya’s Tusker beat URA of Uganda in last year’s edition played in Tanzania. Rwanda will be represented by Atraco while Uganda will field Kampala City Council (KCC) as the pair won last season’s leagues in their respective countries. Ends
