As the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) edges closer, delegates will get the chance to participate in various sports activities during their stay in Kigali. More than 8,000 guests, including senior government officials from 54 Commonwealth member countries, have confirmed their participation at the weeklong meeting, slated June 20-26. The highly anticipated event, taking place on the African continent for the first time since 2007, will be more than just a meeting as a series of social and sports activities will be organized to keep the delegates entertained and experience the Rwandan capital beyond the meeting halls. Weekend Sport looks at some sports events organized on the sidelines of the weeklong CHOGM 2022 summit. Kigali Night Run Kigali Night Run is increasingly becoming a popular event for Rwandans and visitors, and CHOGM delegates will be able to experience it. Scheduled for June 21, participants will depart Kigali Heights roundabout in Kimihurura at 7pm for a duration of two hours. The run itinerary was yet to be announced by press time Thursday, but it is usually a 5km distance. Register here to participate. Networking Golf Tournament Also known as the CHOGM Rwanda Open Championship, the golf tournament is a home-grown international competition designed to provide a high-profile networking event for local and international corporate and businesspeople from across the Commonwealth. The tournament will take place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2022 in Kigali on June 24 at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas. A cocktail reception is also on agenda from 6pm. Register here to participate. CHOGM Cricket Exhibition Match Cricket is synonymous with the Commonwealth and the fastest growing sport in Rwanda. To celebrate the Commonwealth countries descending to Rwanda, the country’s iconic cricket stadium – Gahanga Cricket Oval – will host an exhibition match on June 23. The main event will showcase the best male and female players in Rwanda alongside other high-profile players from around the Commonwealth. Delegates will have the chance to get involved in fun drills with the women’s national team, learn about the history of Rwandan cricket and then watch a competitive cricket match whilst networking and enjoying delicious food and cocktails. Transport will be provided. Format: According to the schedule, delegates will arrive from 12:00pm to watch or train with the women’s national team in fun cricket drills on the pitch. The main game will be a 20-overs-a-side mixed-gender game with the best of Rwandan talent and high-profile athletes from around the commonwealth. Canapés, wines, and cocktails will be served throughout, with DJs providing entertainment. How to participate: Participants are required to pay a fee of USD150 (Rwf 150 000), which will cover meals, drinks, and the cost of running the cricket match and entertainment and transport.
