CNLS, Gatsibo District sign US$90,000 cooperation deal

EASTERN PROVINCE GATSIBO — The National Aids Control Commission (CNLS) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Gatsibo District authorities for cooperation framework focused on the fight against HIV/AIDS around the Nyabiheke refugee camp. The CNLS Deputy Executive Secretary, Antoine Semukanya signed on behalf of CNLS, while the Mayor of Gatsibo, Vianney John Murego inked the deal on behalf of the district. “Our district is not doing so well in terms of HIV control. With this deal I believe that we will not only prevent new infections but also care for those who are already infected,” Murego said. The project will be executed in Gatsibo and Ngarama Sectors. It is expected to cost US $ 90,020. The first tranche amounting to US $ 54,822 has already been released. Both the signatories to the MOU urged people in charge of implementing the project to ensure that the funds are used effectively. “I only ask you to use the funds effectively so that it will positively impact on the intended beneficiaries,” Semukanya said, cautioning those responsible against falsifying reports of their activities. He noted that more funds to be disbursed will depend on the effective use of what has so far been released, adding that the implementers need to fast-track their activities. “Carrying out the activities rightly brings pride to the nation. It also supports the nation in its programme of working tirelessly to support its citizens,” he added. Emmanuel Rusine, of the Great Lakes Initiative on HIV/AIDS (GLIA) in Rwanda, who is also the in charge of regional projects in CNLS, disclosed that the project is being funded by the World Bank. Ends
