NORTHERN PROVINCE Police and local authorities in Gakenke District are investigating a school matron of Ecole de Nemba accused of Genocide ideology. Clementine Tuyisenge was arrested for forcing a student to remove a Genocide commemoration purple ribbon from her arm. The student, Betty Uwimana, a Genocide survivor, refused to remove the ribbon despite the matron insisting. Uwimana is said to have been traumatised in the process. The confrontation with the matron sucked in more seven students who also got traumatised in the process and were rushed to Nemba Hospital. Three of the affected students, Joyce Muhawenimana, Clementine Akimanizanye and Ann Nyiranshunti were still admitted on Monday. Following the arrest, other teachers declared a sit in strike action which prompted police to summon them for questioning. According to the vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Hyacinthe Twishime, the teachers said they laid down their tools because of anxiety after the arrest of their colleague. Twishime said Monday that investigations are ongoing to unearth all facts about the genocide ideology and all those teachers involved. Last year, Ecole de Nemba, was one of the schools where Genocide ideology was reported in Gakenke, and the school’s headmaster and his deputy were arrested and prosecuted. Ends
