Girls outperform boys in PLE exams, as boys lead in O-Level

The Ministry of Education announced results of the national exams for the 2023-2024 academic year, covering both Primary schools and the Ordinary Level of secondary schools (O-Level) on Tuesday, August 27. A total of 202,021 students sat for the Primary Leaving Examinations (111,249 girls and 90,772 boys) while 143,227 candidates sat for O-Level exams (79,933 girls and 63,294 boys). The results of the Primary Leaving Exams (PLE) indicate that girls outperformed boys, with a pass rate of 97 per cent compared to 96.6 per cent for boys. The general pass rate is 96.8 per cent. ALSO READ: Education ministry releases 2024-2025 school calendar For the O-Level exams, the trend reversed, with boys achieving a pass rate of 95.8 per cent, surpassing the 92 per cent pass rate for girls. Overall, the pass rate for O-Level exams was 93.8 per cent. Minister of Education Twagirayezu Gaspard, who announced the results, noted the strong performance of primary school students in most subjects. He said Mathematics saw a pass rate of 71.9 per cent, while Science and Elementary Technology, and Kinyarwanda each had a pass rate of 99.5 per cent. English saw a 90.7 per cent pass rate, while the rate for Social and Religious Studies was 99.7 per cent. ALSO READ: NESA announces travel schedule for students returning to school In O-Level exams, Kinyarwanda saw the highest pass rate of 99.9 per cent, followed by English and Entrepreneurship, 99.8 per cent and 99.1 per cent, respectively. Geography and Environment saw a pass rate of 98.7 per cent. History and Citizenship saw a 96.4 per cent pass rate, while Mathematics had a 90 per cent rate, while Biology and Health Sciences had a pass rate of 89.9 per cent. Chemistry and Physics saw a pass rate of 80.8 per cent and 60.3 per cent, respectively.
