FEATURED: DStv Rwanda, Tele 10 reach out to Genocide survivors

Pay TV distribution company, Tele 10 and its partner, DStv Rwanda, inaugurated two houses that were renovated for Genocide survivors on Friday, April 29. The company also donated support to Ntarama Genocide Memorial. The renovated houses were donated to Venancie Uwamurera and Célestin Karangwa who are genocide survivors living in Ntarama sector, Bugesera district. Uwamurera who lost four children during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi hailed the companies for coming to her rescue as a vulnerable resident who was struggling to have decent shelter. One of the houses that were rehabilitated by the Group in Bugesera District. “I am really glad for the support, I can’t imagine my house is well roofed now, I won’t be worried of rain leakages anymore,” she said. She added: “You can see I am shedding tears of joy, because of what you have done for me. May God bless you and may He bless our president who stopped the genocide.” Karangwa also echoed the same views and commended the then Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) soldiers who saved him from the outrageous arms of the killers. Eugène Nyagahene, the founder of Tele 10 Group called on the group’s staff to also focus on survivors’ mental health. “This is our contribution to rebuild a nation that did not only lose infrastructures. Also, we are doing this to help the mental wellbeing of these survivors, as well as raise their standards of living as our agenda to combat the effects of genocide,” he added. Tele 10 and DStv Rwanda staff and management lay wreaths to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at Ntarama Genocide Memorial on April 29. Nyagahene also added that despite the impacts of the pandemic, they are planning on conducting more activities aimed at scaling up the standards of living for genocide survivors. Martha Uwamugira, the Executive Secretary of Ntarama Sector, lauded the efforts of DStv Rwanda/Tele 10 Group towards Genocide survivors, citing that it is a great contribution to their lives. “These survivors were living in very old houses, so your support is more beneficial than I can explain,” she reiterated. Uwamugira moved on to highlight that Bugesera district is one of the regions that experienced intense massacres during the genocide, and hence, such support is crucial for survivors who were immensely affected. After the donation and inauguration, DStv Rwanda/Tele 10 Group staff paid their respects to victims laid at Ntarama Genocide Memorial, and also donated financial support to facilitate its daily activities.
