Quality care is our priority at CHUK

Following the article published in the New Times of Thursday, October 18, 2007 titled “Patients face ‘costly neglect’ at CHUK”, the administration of the University Central Hospital, Kigali (CHUK), would like to remind the New Times and the public in general that quality care remains a cornerstone in our medical practice and that patient negligence is not tolerated. It is paramount to note that despite challenges, tremendous positive changes have been made in the last five years at CHUK. One could for example note the upgrade of medical knowledge, staff training in quality care, and a dedicated staff that works on a 24 hours basis, which attest CHUK’s continuous commitment to better serve the population. Failure to recognize the tireless efforts and sacrifice made by the doctors and nurses at CHUK is a great disservice to such individuals and the institution, not forgetting efforts by the Ministry of Health and its partners aimed at enabling CHUK to upgrade to a modern referral hospital, with the upcoming state of the art Emergency Unit and additional theatre rooms. Furthermore, it should be noted that CHUK acts both as a referral hospital and district health facility, thus, creating a large number of patients flocking the hospital. A situation that both CHUK and the Ministry of Health continue to try and find a lasting solution. Allow us to take this opportunity to stress to the general public that at CHUK, there is and there will never be room for patient negligence. It is considered as unethical and any death that occurs as result of carelessness is not acceptable. Therefore, we call upon the public to always report cases of negligence and substandard medical care to the hospital administration for thorough investigations. Finally, the administration of CHUK wishes to remind journalists that doors are open and we are looking forward to a collaborative working relationship as we strive to provide quality services to our people.
