Hiring the right employees for a firm is one of the challenges at workplaces today. Some applicants look for jobs for survival whereas others are aiming at exploring different positions. According to James Kisakye, the managing director of KISA Design ltd, personalising communication with applicants is the first step to help you point out best employees, as it is an opportunity to keep the applicants engaged in the hiring process hence helping the employer find serious applicants. “Set up a trusted and experienced hiring committee as this will help you have a wide screening of the applicants. Creating an environment of open communication between the applicants and the leadership also gives a voice to the applicants and can lead to positive changes in the company at the same time fighting the bias of employers in the hiring process,” Kisakye says. He adds that employers should perform face to face interviews. Through this, an employer is able to examine the intention of the applicant towards the company, hence ending up with the right employees. Kisakye also supports the fact that employers should set up company’s goals to help them realise the right group of employees to hire. These employees should have the love and willingness to help the company achieve its goals. According to Eric Muhire, the owner of Kigali Solar Energy Technology, experienced and well-trained applicants create a smooth flow of work hence good results. “Training workers helps you pick out the best. Use advanced capable usual employees in your firm to train new workers on probation and make sure they are giving them right information needed for that particular duty,” Muhire says. Ask time saving screening questions, try finding out how the applicants came to know about the company. This also helps the hiring team know the intentions of the applicant, he adds. He also notes that capable employees will want to know the guidance of their work and sense of security. A company must have values to help point out right employees and with this; workers are more likely to make the right decisions that help them achieve the company’s visions and goals. “Set up a minimum qualification/education level. This helps attract qualified applicants and it helps simplify the screening process and do not ignore interns, as they are hungry for work and can produce good employees when given an opportunity.” Janet Umuhoza, an employee at Kigali Solar Energy Technology, agrees that an employer should be transparent by avoiding bias about a certain group of individuals for instance, tribe, religion or sex, for every different group can perform as the other. Bias about a certain group can hinder you from knowing the potential of every person. In addition, employers should first check if the employee’s age fits the duty. Some job duties require responsible employees who can handle pressure as well as risk takers. “Consider his or her availability to be sure they will make time for your duties. Workers who are creative and those with listening skills should also be given an opportunity as they are likely to be productive.”
