Rwandan funnyman Merci Ndaruhutse, commonly known as Fally Merci, has organised a comedy show dubbed ‘Gen Z Comedy Show’ with the aim of promoting young upcoming comedians in the country. Ndaruhutse says that the idea came to him because he realised comedy shows are outnumbered in comparison to other entertainment shows, and also because young comedians barely have a platform to showcase their talent, which hinders their growth and limits opportunities to perform at big shows. He says that the first show was held in a studio due to the pandemic, but now that the measures have been lifted, he approached ArtRwanda Ubuhanzi and they provided a place that can host 80 people in a tent, and some friends helped with sound system. The second show took place last Friday hosting comedian Patrick Rusine as the main guest performer, alongside eight young comedians who were selected during casting. However, every young talented comedian is welcome to join and show what they can do, also be trained. Among other comedians and TV personalities present at the show were Clapton Kibonke, Joshua, Pattyno, Junior Giti and Rufendeke among others. “I have hope in the young comedy talents that we are training in this project because for just the two shows that we have done, I have started receiving recommendations from other comedians, like Kibonke, who will be coming to seek for talent to participate in their own events,” says Ndaruhutse. This show will be taking place every second and last Thursday of the month at ArtRwanda Ubuhanzi incubation centre. Entrance fee is 5,000 per person and it includes one coffee or soft drink. This show will also be broadcast on KC2 every Sunday at 6pm. The third born in a family of four, Ndaruhutse who had his first comedy performance in 2017 was the only comedian who featured among the finalists of the first edition of ArtRwanda Ubuhanzi. The audience cracks up during the show.
