MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK, one of the best fashion shows in Rwanda, is set to return after almost two years without taking place because covid-19 restrictions. The fashion show in 2019 attracted some of the arguably best fashion designers on the continent, and is expected to attract many others in this years edition which will kick off on May 16, and run till May 21. Danny Ndayishimiye, one of the organisers of the event, told The New Times that Mercedes Benz fashion week is back in style with a lot to showcase in the local and international fashion industry. “The event is back after two years without taking place. This means that there is a lot to showcase since players in this sector spent a long period of time without working.” He said that applications from designers to attend this show ended on March 15, but applications of models who want to participate in the fashion week will be open soon. Last year’s edition, which was suspended last minute, was going to attract a total of 15 local and international designers, and 30 models from different parts of the world. The number of designers who are going to participate in this year’s edition hasn’t been released yet, but organisers noted that all continents will be represented in this fashion show. The fashion industry is one of the sectors most hit by Covid-19 but Ndayishimiye encouraged players in fashion to take this time and be creative noting that it is the return of fashion. Mercedes Benz Fashion week is rated as one of the biggest fashion week events on the globe, and Kigali was the second city in Africa to host Mercedes Benz Fashion Week after Accra, Ghana. Other cities that host the Mercedes-sponsored event include Istanbul (Turkey), Brisbane (Australia), Mexico, Malaysia and Tbilisi (Georgia) among others.
